silversmithing techniques

hand raising

hand raising is a traditional technique of hammering a flat piece of metal over steel tools or stakes. working from the centre out the metal is hammered in concentric circles. once the surface has been covered in hammer marks it becomes work hardened and so the metal is heated - "annealed" to soften it. it is then cleaned before the process is repeated. each piece can go through many courses of raising to produce the desired shape.
